The alto recorder is a member of the recorder family and has a much deeper pitch than the other instruments in that group. It is about an octave below the treble or soprano recorder, which makes it the highest-pitched instrument in the family.
It is also known as the Alto or Viola da Gamba Recorder, since alto recorders are quite similar to viola da gamba in appearance and playing technique. Indeed, some manufacturers still refer to them as violas. They are also known as Double Recorders because they have two finger holes for each note: one for producing fundamentals and another for overtones that sounds an octave higher than the fundamental frequency. Read on to learn more about these interesting instruments.
